Southeast Chapter
Tenth Annual Moso Workday
Silver Brook Cemetery
March 17, 2001
Fifteen people gathered at the Old Silver Brook Cemetery
in Anderson, SC on Saturday, March 17, 2001 for the Tenth
Annual Moso Cleanup. Attending were: Robby Russell, Mike Hotchkiss,
Mike and Keena Turner, Gary & Brenda Sirmons, Bert &
Mary Ann & Merlin Silverman, Joanne & Roy Palmer,
Jim Montague, Misti Wright, Rick Goohs, Christian Martini
and Fulton Powell. We were pleased to have Christian, Fulton,
Roy & Joanne with us and look forward to having them join
the Southeast Chapter. Rick Goohs came all the way from Ohio
and had the distinction of traveling the farthest.
The group began gathering about 9 a.m. and started pulling
vines and weeds, cutting out dead and damaged culms and cleaning
out undergrowth. A trash pile was established quickly and
another area was reserved for cut poles which we would later
divide and take home with us. Amidst all the work were many
bamboo discussions, lots of visiting, catching up and getting
acquainted.
We all delighted in discovering quite a few emerging new
shoots and promptly marked them with orange surveyor's tape
to lessen the number of trampled shoots.
There was the usual amount of equipment problems....run down
batteries for Sawzall....missing nut for weed eater....forgotten
trash bags...lost gloves which were later found, etc. but
no real disasters (thankfully).
We broke for lunch and then returned for additional cleanup
and dividing cut poles with some of us digging a plant or
two to take home. The event which ended about 4:00 p.m. was
another successful cleanup enjoyed by all who attended.
The Eleventh Annual Silver Brook Cleanup is tentatively
scheduled for Saturday, March 2, 2002. The confirmed date
(and rain date) will be announced later.
